The Volvo Ghent factory will start building cars for the Chinese brand, Lynk & Co, from the end of 2019. The announcement, by the Swedish car manufacturer, came on Monday. Last year, Volvo Cars took a 30% shareholding in the Chinese company, alongside Geely Auto (50%) and Zhejiang Geely Holding (20%). Volvo Car Belux maintains that this joint production will have a positive effect on costs, employment and the production volumes on the Ghent site, where 5,000 people currently work.

Lynk & Co as a brand launched in 2015. Sales for the marque take place directly over the Internet. The brand belongs to Zhejiang Geely Holding, the owner of Volvo Cars. The parent company explains that, thanks to this transaction, the Swedish manufacturer will support the expansion of the Chinese brand in Europe, and is opting for greater diversification of its activities.

Cars made by Lynk & Co will be built using the same design architecture (Compact Modular Architecture) as those made by Volvo, currently produced in Ghent.
