Five people have escaped from the De Caricole detention centre for illegal immigrants in Steenokkerzeel in the early hours of Saturday morning, the State Secretary for Immigration and Asylum Theo Franken (N-VA) announced on Twitter. He explained that the floods on Thursday evening indirectly helped their escape.
The Flemish nationalist visited the centre at 11:30 on Saturday, with the Director of the Foreigner’s office Freddy Roosemont and Steenokkerzeel mayor Kurt Ryon.
Three illegal immigrants escaped from the same detention centre last Friday. Two of them were caught the next day.
