Two policemen and one passerby killed in Liège, two other policemen injured

Two police officers and a passenger in a car were killed in a shootout that took place Tuesday morning in the center of Liège, according to a police spokesperson in Liège. Two other police officers were injured during the shooting. The perpetrator was shot down by the local Liège police unit for special interventions (PAB).

At 10:30 shots were heard in the city center of Liège. An armed man shot two police officers at the Cafe des Augustins bar. The gunman then fled and entered a primary school, Athenaeum Leonie de Waha, situated on Boulevard Avroy, where he took a cleaning lady hostage.

He was subsequently shot and killed by the PAB platoon. The students at the school are safe and under police protection, according to the spokesperson.

Liège’s Mayor, Willy Demeyer, has arrived at the scene. The federal crisis center is following the situation, tweeted the Minister of the Interior, Jan Jambon.
