The Executive of the Muslims in Belgium (EMB) on Wednesday condemned the attack perpetrated in Liège that claimed the lives of two policewomen and a 22-year-old man. It also expressed its compassion for the victims’ families.
"These dramatic events remind us once again of other events that marked the darkest moments of our history,” the EMB said in a press release. “Whatever the assailant’s motive at the time of this horrible act, it is important for our society to unite around its values, reject all violence and confirm the new co-existence as a common foundation. Polarisation would mean playing the extremists’ game.”
The assailant, Benjamin H., attacked two policewomen on Tuesday morning in the centre of Liège with a knife before taking away their service weapons and firing at them while they were on the ground. He then killed a 22-year-old man, a passenger in a vehicle that was parked at the scene. Four other police officers were wounded.
Many elements point to terrorist motives for the act, the federal prosecutors’ office said, particularly the fact that the assailant repeatedly shouted “Allahu Akbar”.
