Prince Laurent to contest allowance reduction at the Council of State

Prince Laurent will contest parliament’s reduction of his allowance before the Council of State, his attorney,  Maitre Laurent Arnauts said on Friday. In late March 2018, the Chamber had approved the 15% reduction to penalise him for participating, dressed in his military uniform, in a reception at the Embassy of China without the required prior autorisation.

"After carefully examining the legal and institutional complexity of the situation,” Prince Laurent has decided to request the Council of State to annul this sanction, the attorney for the brother of King Philip said in a press release.

"The request, which will be lodged shortly, is based mainly on the violation of his rights to defence and misuse of power,” said Maitre Arnauts. “The proposal that he recently reiterated to the Government, to clarify his situation and that of his family by means of a protocol complementing the allowance has remained unanswered. Moreover, the prince cannot accept the violations of his basic rights that have been inflicted upon him once again.”
