Beat the holiday traffic jams, avoid travelling on Saturday, says Touring

The Touring association is advising vacationers to avoid travelling by road on Saturday, warning that they are likely to be affected by heavy traffic jams throughout the country next weekend. Saturday has been classified as code “red” in forecasts for French, Swiss, German, Austrian, Spanish and Italian roads. “Even alternative roads will be congested” in the direction of departures, and it could be impossible to avoid traffic jams irrespective of the time of day, adds the association, which seeks to foster safe, comfortable road travel.

Sunday is a better day for travelling abroad, the agency added, explaining that traffic on that day will be “heavy but fluid” except in Southeastern France, where roads will be more congested. The agency added that it is also advisable to leave for vacation on Monday, and the Thursday before the weekend.

For returning vacationers, the best days to travel are Friday, Monday and, to a lesser extent, Sunday, according to Touring.

On Sunday evening, there could be long lines of traffic on roads leading into Belgium.
