The A960 Godetia leaves on NATO naval mission

The Belgian command and logistical support vessel, A960 Godetia, left Zeebrugge Port on Monday at about 2.00 p.m. to carry out a mission for the North Atlantic Treaty Organisation (NATO), the Belgian Navy indicated. Over the next few weeks, the Godetia will serve as the command platform for the Standing Naval Mine Counter Measures Group 1 (SNMCMG1) which will be stationed in northern waters until the end of 2018.

The vessel, commanded by Frigate Captain Peter Ramboer, was initially scheduled to leave on Sunday, but finally left one day later. It was immediately accompanied by Latvian, Lithuanian and British minesweepers. German and Dutch vessels are also scheduled to join the NATO fleet in the Baltic.

One of the first missions of the Belgian vessel, as command platform of the SNMCMG1 fleet, will be clearing a historic minefield off the west coast of Norway. The Belgian command continues until the end of this year.

This is not the first time Belgium takes over the rotating command of the fleet. The last time it did so was in 2012, also with the Godetia.
