A man being held at Nivelles prison managed to get onto the roof of the establishment early on Saturday evening, according to RTL Info. The story was confirmed by the Nivelles-Genappes police department.
The prisoner refused to go back in their cell after being brought in from the courtyard. He got onto the roof, where he remained until around 10pm.
RTL Info said local police intervened and set up a safety perimeter around the prison, which remained in place until special units arrived. Police negotiated with the prisoner, but said the incident was “an unusual situation which was handled calmly”.
