Roadworks on E40: avoid motorway and entire area, authorities warn

Motorists are being advised of the likelihood of serious traffic problems on the E40 between Leuven and Brussels in both directions, due to roadworks on the E40 and E314. Works on the carriageway in the direction of Liege will start this evening (Friday ) at 20.00, and last until Monday morning only.

In the other direction, however, with traffic coming from Leuven to Brussels, the works are due to last until 3 September, which also happens to be the day children return to school – itself a notorious black-spot.

Both sets of works concern the E40 junction with the E314. That junction will be reduced to a single lane. Traffic coming from Liege will be reduced to a single lane just before the E314 junction. Traffic coming on the E314 from Lummen will also be reduced to one lane as it joins the E40.

The Flemish Traffic Centre fears the worst, and advises motorists to avoid the area if possible. “We’re expecting long tailbacks even at moments where you would normally have no problem. People would be better off using the E40 and E324 as little as possible during this period. Look for alternatives, and consult traffic information on our website and on the radio if you absolutely have to be on the E40 or E314.”
