The body of a woman has been found in a car recovered on Thursday afternoon in the Sambre river, in Namur. La Dernière Heure (“DH”) and the Sudpresse publications reported on the incident yesterday. Belga, which visited the scene, observed a high deployment of police and firemen. A multitude of roads were blocked, a temporary shelter was set up, and a tow truck was also on site.
The Namur Public Prosecutor’s Office did not wish to confirm anything on Thursday afternoon, although only one car was brought back to the surface. The magistrate in charge of relations with the press in the case, Charlotte Fosseur, indicated that she would communicate further information on Friday regarding evidence in the investigation.
The boot of the car, which appears to be an old mark of the Renault Megane or Laguna, was fairly well concealed by the temporary shelter. A registration plate was visible at the front of the shelter.
The discovery was made a few hundred metres from the Pont de Flawinne (Flawinne bridge) on Rue Tir de Ronet. According to the media, a man is thought to have plunged the vehicle into the Sambre river on Thursday morning and then been arrested for questioning, in the wake of the chain of events, and placed in a cell.
Sudpresse states that he is thought to have strangled a woman from Boninne and may have been glimpsed by a farmer. Seeing that he had been observed, the assumed murderer would then have thrown the woman’s body into the boot of his vehicle. He is thought to have then fled towards Flawinne, before catapaulting the car into the Samber. Alerted by the farmer, the police are thought to have quickly arrived at the scene and arrested the suspect for questioning.
DH adds that the man may have confessed to the crime or at least in part. Several more bodies could be found.
