The Belgian Federation of Wines and Spirits, Vinum Et Spiritus, has decided to support the Emile Leus Fund in its efforts to have more alcohol detectors installed in public places. “With the breathalysers, drivers can assess their alcohol levels themselves before taking the wheel,” the Federation said on Thursday.
It also aims to raise awareness on “responsible” alcohol consumption among operators and staff of hotels, bars, cafés and restaurants along with organisers of mass events.
“It is with great pride that we are joining the Emile Leus Fund in its fight against the dramas linked to alcohol,” the federation’s director-general, Geert Van Lerberghe, said.
The Emile Leus Fund was founded by the parents of Emile Leus, who died in 2009 in an accident caused by a drunk driver in Oosterzele.
It advocates greater efforts to raise public awareness on the dangers of drinking and driving, and calls for more breathalysers in public places.
The Belgian Federation of Wines and Spirits says it will also provide financial support for an itinerant play aimed at raising awareness in schools on the risks of alcohol.
