The New Flemish Alliance did not wish to react on Tuesday to the press articles reporting the steadfast commitment of the Prime Minister Charles Michel, to approve the UN pact upon migration. Potentially, he will go himself to Marrakech in December to do so. The Flemish nationalists refer to their communication yesterday, in which they describe the document, the first global accord upon migration, as “highly problematic” in substance.
Evoking sources within the Reformist Movement and the government, the daily publications De Standaard and Le Soir indicate that Charles Michel has “firmly” made known to his government partners that Belgium will sign the pact.
When questioned by the Belga press agency, the Prime Minister’s Cabinet did not wish to comment upon these articles.
The approach being taken is identical to the department for the Secretary of State for Asylum and Migration, Theo Francken, where reference is being made to the party’s communication yesterday. The communiqué asserted being “largely concerned by the potential legal implications of the pact.” The New Flemish Alliance wrote, “The text goes against our view of migration, and we also think against government policy in this sphere.”
The Vice-Prime Minister, Jan Jambon stated on Tuesday, speaking on the radio, that his own political party wants the subject to be further discussed within government.
