One square metre of forest for each Climate March participant

Conservation groups say they will plant one square metre of forest in Flanders and South America for every participant in a march in Brussels on 2 December on behalf of the world’s climate. The Claim the Climate March aims to be the biggest demonstration on climate issues ever organised in Belgium, according to organisers BOS+, Climate Express and Coalition Climate. “The more people there are in the streets of Brussels, the stronger the voice for a responsible climate policy will be,” the organisations say.

Half of the trees will be planted in Flanders; the other half in Ecuador.

The march will coincide with the first day of the United Nations Conference on Climate Change (COP24) in Katowice. “We want Belgian politicians to show more ambition on the European and international scenes, and work on an in-depth short- and long-term national climate policy,” Coalition Climate Vice-President Dave van Meel stressed.

“Energy policy and ambition are needed to limit global warming to 1,5°C as stipulated in the Paris Agreement,” he added.
