Belgium used as base by drug traffickers

A report broadcast on the KRO-NCRV radio station on Sunday says the number of cannabis plantations in Belgium is on the rise and they are often controlled by Dutch criminals. The traffickers finance the operation, provide the equipment and distribute the product. The original cuttings come from the Netherlands, according to the Judicial Federal police Commissioner Marc Vancoillie.

The cannabis produced in Belgium is sent back to the Netherlands, where it is then transported elsewhere.

Around a hundred Dutch people in Antwerp have been arrested for being involved in drug trafficking so far this year.

The increase in plantations in Belgium, mainly in the border regions, could be explained by the Dutch authorities’ recent stricter approach.
