Belgium’s hotel restaurant and catering sector in a crisis
Denis Ducarme is keen to ensure that there are adequate protections in place for social security contributions for the HoReCa sector.

The Federal Minister for SMEs and the Self-employed Denis Ducarme has acknowledged in an announcement that the hotel, restaurant and catering sector is in crisis. The news is reported by the Sudpresse publications on Wednesday. The requests for adjustment, deferring and the exemption from social security contributions for the self-employed in the so-called ‘HoReCa’ sector will now be made easier.

The minister comments in the Sudpresse publications, “As well as being a significant provider of jobs, ‘HoReCa’ contributes to the dynamism and the conviviality of our towns and cities.”

He explained that the sector also contributes to Belgium’s ability to attract tourists. “It was, however, weakened by the necessary security environment linked to the Brussels attacks. That has had repercussions on its activity volume, by the ever present impact of the urban improvement works and by mobility concerns. I therefore wish that a support measure be implemented. Such action will enable affected workers to simplify their approaches to adjustment, deferring or the exemption from social security contributions.”
