Weekend without alcohol at the wheel begins this Friday at 6 p.m.

The federal and local police are organising a new “Weekend without alcohol at the wheel” from today, Friday, at 6.00 p.m. to 6.00 a.m. on Monday. “For 60 hours, many alcohol tests will be organised throughout the country, on both highways and secondary roads,” the federal police warned in a press release.

In 2017, people driving under the influence of alcohol caused 4,210 accidents resulting in injury or death, the police recalled. “That represents one accident every two hours and 11% of all accidents with deaths and injuries,” they added.

During the previous “Weekend without alcohol at the wheel”, held on 8-11 June last, the local police had run alcohol tests on 32,299 persons. About 2.24% of the drivers tested were in infraction and 161 of them had their driver’s licenses withdrawn immediately.

Meanwhile, the winter Bob campaign is still ongoing. Based on the principle of ‘the driver does not drink’, it will end on 28 January at 6.00 a.m.
