Workers at Proximus, when their job disappears as such, have been able since 2016 to retire from aged 58. De Standaard is reporting on Friday that the system was extended at the beginning of this year, although political support for the measure is lagging behind.

The daily publication says that discussions around the possibility of resorting to early retirement are themselves a non-event, since the system has already existed for two years. The system was tacitly extended from the beginning of January.

So as to take advantage of the measure employees have to be subject to “restructuring”. An example would be their role disappearing due to automation. It is not publicly known how many workers are thus paid by Proximus for staying at home. The CGSP (the General Federation of Belgian Labour) believes that the figure is around 250 workers.
