Congolese children adopted by Belgian couples could have been kidnapped

Have Congolese children adopted by Belgian couples been kidnapped, with their biological parents still alive? To answer these questions, the prosecutor's office has asked about 15 Belgian couples to supply a DNA sample of their adopted child, reports Het Nieuwsblad, De Standaard et Gazet van Antwerpen on Tuesday.

Investigations reveal that Congolese parents unsuspectingly sent their children to what they thought were summer camps, what in reality turned out to be an orphanage. From there they were subsequently adopted to Belgian couples.

The orphanage in question has since been closed. The central figure in this case, is Belgian-Congolese Julienne Mpemba.

The biological Congolese parents of at least four children, adopted by Belgians are still alive today, while there could be more.
