Excise on tobacco brings in 123.8 million euros more in 2018

The Belgian State earned about 8.83 billion euros in excise tax on various goods last year, Sudpresse newspapers reported on Thursday, with the indirect tax on tobacco bringing in 123.8 million euros more than in 2017. Excise earnings from tobacco moved up to 2,373 billion euros in 2018, after stagnating for four years. Border sales are thought to have played a role in the increase, especially since the price of a packet of cigarettes went up by 1 euro in France in March 2018.

Excise duty on alcohol amounted to 815.5 million euros in 2018, as against 823.2 million in 2017 and 830.7 million in 2016.
