Farid Bamouhammad died in Uccle hospital in the early hours of Sunday morning.
His death was confirmed by sources close to his family, according to the Belga agency. Mr Bamouhammad was considered one of Belgium’s most dangerous prisoners.
Mr Bamouhammad left Saint-Gilles prison on Wednesday, to be admitted into the palliative care ward at the Saint-Elisabeth European clinic in Uccle. Family members who were at his bedside said he was admitted after a three-week hunger strike. He had also been refusing water for the past week.
Mr Bamouhammad was sometimes nicknamed “Farid le fou”. He spent his last days on Earth in the Uccle hospital surrounded by his family, with no police surveillance.
