Antwerp mayor Bart De Wever has called himself the Darth Vader of Belgian politics in a behind the scenes show about his life. Someone has to be the bad guy, said De Wever in the VTM programme ‘Alloo Bij Bart De Wever’.
As part of the show, Luk Alloo followed Antwerp mayor and N-VA chairman De Wever for months. The show includes all kinds of official meetings but also trips to places that were important in his youth, reports Het Nieuwsblad.
At one stage in the show, De Wever expresses his love for Star Wars villain Darth Vader. “I am not a Calimero”, says De Wever. He was small, and the rest are big. But I am big, and the rest are small, he said.
“I am rather the Darth Vader of Belgian politics.” Someone must be the bad guy. “Squeezing someone’s throat shut from afar, that’s a dream,” laughed the NVA chairman.
At the next meeting, Alloo surprised De Wever with a mask and a lightsabre from the film.
I feel a bit ridiculous now, said De Wever. But Darth Vader is a misunderstood figure in the film saga. In the end, everything goes well with him, and he ends up on the side of the good guys, he explained.
The complete episode of ‘Alloo Bij Bart De Wever’ will be shown tomorrow evening at 21.45 hrs at VTM.
