People who wanted to make payments with Bancontact on Wednesday morning may have encountered problems due to a fault in the system. Worldline, which manages the electronic payment system, confirmed that the service was disrupted between 5 am and 9.25 am.
Not all payments with the bank card were impossible, but certain transactions could not be executed, said Worldline spokeswoman Sandrine van der Ghinst. Cash withdrawals at the machines and payments with credit cards were still possible.
"We follow the situation closely and apologise for the inconvenience," said the spokeswoman. The interference was not limited to a specific area but was general.
The problem has since been resolved, but the specific reason was not clear.
