Citizens petition Court to protect Belgium’s trees

Many citizens deposited a petition against the State and the regions on Friday in front of the Brussels Lower Court for the protection of Belgium’s trees. They hope in this way to draw attention to the rights of non-human life, as part of actions in favour of a law on climate in Belgium.

The petitioners are inspired by the Declaration of the Rights of the Tree recently adopted in France to protect and preserve trees. They wish to recall that trees are both the victims of climate change and the solutions to it.

They feel a future “climate law” needs to commit Belgium’s authorities, at all levels of power, to take the measures needed to slash greenhouse gas emissions between now and 2050, in keeping with the targets announced nationally and globally.

Any citizen wishing to sign the petition may do so up to 26 May.
