Supermaket chain Aldi on Tuesday said it had "no intention" to raise prices in its Belgian stores, following reports of price hikes in Germany. Aldi's Belgian management released the information in reaction to reports of rising prices in Germany, where the company is headquartered, and where it was said to be "under pressure" following sales and discounts implemented by its competitors.
A strategy which would consist of rising brand prices to offer more attractive discounts would reportedly only be employed in the German market.
"We are not planning on rising prices," Johan Van de Wiele, purchase managing director for the German discount chain stated.
"On the contrary, we are invested in permantently lowering prices for a number of products," he added, citing a recent drop of grey shrimp prices.
According to the supermarket's website, there are over 440 Aldi stores in Belgium.
