Brussels named the fifth most expensive European capital to build in
After Copenhagen, London, Moscow and Paris, Brussels is the fifth most expensive city in Europe in terms of construction costs, followed by Rome, Berlin and Amsterdam. New York, San Francisco and Hong Kong are at the top of the world’s list, according to the 2019 International Construction Costs Report released on Thursday by consulting firm Arcadis.

The ten least expensive cities are almost all in Asia, according to the report that compares data from 100 cities worldwide.

In 2019, the average construction cost is expected to increase in Belgium by 2.5%, compared to 2018. Building and investing intelligently are real challenges, according to Arcadis.

"A growing number of construction companies invest in technology (...) for more efficient design and execution. (...) Durability is obviously foremost. In addition to the already known energy efficiency, it is circular construction, biodiversity and water management that are now subject to increasing interest. Droughts and water shortages in recent years are certainly one reason why," Arcadis Belgium Building Manager Bram De Meester said.
