Elton John said goodbye to his Belgian fans on Thursday evening during a concert lasting three hours at the Sportpaleis in Antwerp. The 72-year-old British singer has set off on a final three-year tour before retiring from the stage.

The tour is called “Farewell Yellow Brick Road” in reference to his popular album “Goodbye Yellow Brick Road.”

In Antwerp on Thursday evening, the British icon sang versions of classic titles from the seventies and eighties to a full house. Apart from a big screen for visuals, the singer’s performances were low key. Accustomed to switching his flamboyant costumes during his act, the artist changed his attire only once during the spectacle.

The sell-out show was focussed on the singer’s old offerings, “Believe” is the only song played that was released after 1984. At the beginning and end of the spectacle, the songs “Bennie and the Jets” and “Goodbye Yellow Brick Road”, from the album of the same name, were performed. The encore on “Your Song” delighted this audience that was seeing the singer for the last time. His farewell world tour will be continuing until 2020.

On stage in Belgium, the singer commented on Brexit and gave voice to his exasperation concerning the political crisis rattling the United Kingdom and EU. “I’ve had enough,” the artist declared. “I am a European, not an English imperialist or colonialist. We must unite all the more,” he said.
