All of the parties who participated in government policy have been punished, according to socialist FGTB unionist Miranda Ulens (Belgium’s General Labour Federation)
"This government’s policy provoked havoc and was anti-social. We have fought against it for five years," she said in a preliminary analysis of the election results. All central and regional sections of the FGTB will meet on Tuesday.
"People want change, but, unfortunately, they have chosen more extreme, especially because of a migration policy tainted by hatred these last 5 years. The choice of 26 May is also a clear signal for things to change," FGTB secretary-general said.
She noted, however, that the socialist group remains the largest at the federal level.
"For us it is essential that a viable coalition be formed at the federal level as soon as possible. (...) The coalition that has been in place for five years would not be a good answer to the concerns of the population," she said.
The Christian union’s chairman did not wish to comment today on the election results.
