Belgium’s federal and local police are organising a new “Don’t-Drink-and-Drive” weekend from Friday evening to Monday morning.
Additional checks will be done throughout the country to dissuade drivers from taking the wheel under the influence of alcohol or drugs.
The police recall that alternatives exist, such as designating a Bob - someone who will abstain from drinking so as to drive for the group - resorting to taxis and using public transport.
In addition to awareness-building, the police also want to make it easier for people to be tested by using “an integrated approach and deploying different resources throughout the country,” the federal police said in a press release.
During the last Don’t-Drink-and-Drive weekend, in mid-January, breathalyser tests were administered to almost 35,000 drivers, 1.8% of whom tested positive.
