A 24-year-old man has been arrested after an altercation in a reception centre for asylum seekers in Mechelen, Gazet van Antwerpen reports Sunday evening. The 24-year-old man is suspected of attempted murder.

On Friday evening, an argument broke out between two residents of the reception centre for asylum seekers. A man was wounded with a knife during the incident, according to the Flemish daily, this information was not confirmed by the prosecutor's office.

"The victim's life is certainly not in danger," said Stéphanie Chomé, spokeswoman for the Antwerp Public Prosecutor's Office. The man was allowed to leave the hospital on Friday because the injuries were not bad enough to require otherwise.

On Saturday, the suspect was examined by the investigating judge who decided to arrest him. The young man is suspected of attempted murder, assault and battery, and will appear in court in the coming days to decide if he should remain in jail.

The motivation for the attack is not known at this time.
