Over a hundred speeding cameras and radars will be installed in Wallonia by the year's end, as regional authorities attempt to rein in speeding drivers in the Belgian region.
A total of 167 speeding cameras, radars and traffic-light speed sensors will be rolled out across the regional territory in an attempt to reduce speeding rates, after recent studies showed that this type of traffic violation was most prevalent in the French-speaking region.
Fifty-nine radars have already been installed during the first half of the year, and authorities expect to roll out an additional 108 units by the end of the year, according to reports in Belgian media.
The radars will be installed all throughout the region's territory, both in cities, like Namur and Hensies and in regional highways, such as the ones cutting through the Ardennes region.
Less inhabited places will be less concerned by these measures, according to local media.
With an additional 20 radars expected to be installed in by the start of 2020, Wallonia will have an average of 120 units for one million inhabitants, putting in on par with the European average, yet still behind the Flemish average, as the Dutch-speaking region has an average of 260 radars per inhabitant.
