A youth climate summit organised in the city of Namur has been cancelled after less than ten people signed up to participate, climate officials in Wallonia announced Wednesday.

Young people interested in the summer had until June 2 to sign up, and even though the organisers expected hundreds to participate, only three participants signed up.

“Of course we are disappointed,” Stéphane Cools of Wallonia’s Air and Climate Agency (AwAC), said. “Perhaps something was wrong with our communication strategy.”

The three-day summit was organised to give an opportunity for young people to voice their climate concerns.

A report would be drafted after the summit and submitted to the Walloon Parliament, according to local media.

Cools said that one possible reason for the low participation rate could be the timing of the event.

“It may not have been the right time,” he said, referring to the fact that the summit coincided with the end-of-term period for many students.
