Around 15 people jumped into the Meuse during the “Big Jump” in Namur on Sunday afternoon.
This symbolic jump is held in 17 different towns across Belgium on the same day. The event aims to make the general public aware of water quality issues.
The event started in 2005, and has become more and more popular in various countries in Europe ever since. The Royal Sambre and Meuse Nautical Club in Namur organised its own Big jump. The weather put a lot of people off, but the event is mainly symbolic.
“It’s an event organised by civilians who want the European directive to be respected to improve water quality. The event has grown massively over the last 15 years. There have been some changes in the Meuse area but there is still work to be done,” said Louis Lambert (head of organisations, walks, events and festivities at the RSMNC).
The water was apparently quite warm on Sunday. “The water cools down slower than the air around it. A few people took part and the most important thing is that people talk about it”, he said.
