People under the age of 30 are using the car less and less according to a new study by road safety institute, Vias, on the travel behaviour of young people in Belgium.
35% of Belgian citizens under the age of 30, use public transport at least three times a week. The proportion rises to 45% among 18-24-year-olds. Public transportation is particularly popular among young people in Brussels.
Going out without the car
The study also took an interest in how young people travel when they go out. For nights out, two-thirds of people under 30 (and even three-quarters of 18-24-year-olds) avoid driving, proof that the Bob campaigns have left some mark, according to New Mobility.
Young Walloons are mostly driven (40%), while young Flemish people use their bicycles (27%) and Brussels people use public transport (30%) or taxis (15%).
Fewer young people obtain driving licenses
In 2018, the Belgian FPS Mobility issued exactly 111.991 driving licenses. This is an 18% decrease compared to the year 2010.
A striking finding from the figures of the FPS Mobility is that the number of driving licenses issued is falling sharply, especially among young people.
In recent years, driving license deliveries experienced a drop of 10,3% for 18 years old drivers and 15% for 19-year-olds.
