Belgium’s military will receive compensation for surveillance missions requiring them to stay away from home, whether abroad or in Belgium, thanks to a new agreement.

For every day away from home, a soldier will receive two hours of compensation that he can cumulate for example to leave a year earlier for retirement, De Standaard, Het Nieuwsblad, Gazet van Antwerpen and Belang van Limburg announced on Monday.

Unions and leaders reportedly reached recently an agreement on this subject. “Compensation should make up for disadvantages entailed when a soldier cannot sleep at home. His family is then faced with additional costs, such as for childcare,” ACMP- GFCM military union Chairman Yves Huwart said.
