Relay For Life: walking together against cancer

The Relay For Life of the International Community and Waterloo event will bring together the English-speaking expat communities in Belgium and the commune of Waterloo to celebrate the lives of cancer survivors, remember loved ones lost to the disease and fight back against cancer by raising awareness and funds.

The event will be held at St. John’s International School in Waterloo on 16 and 17 May.

Relay For Life is a 24-hour event during which teams of friends, family members or colleagues take turns walking around a track for 24 hours.

Live entertainment, activities, games and refreshments are organized throughout, as well as three different and very moving ceremonies.

Cancer Survivors, people who have battled cancer or are currently undergoing treatment, are the guests of honour at Relay For Life.

They are invited to join other survivors in the Survivors Lounge at any time during Relay. A separate programme of activities and workshops, as well as a reception, food and quiet are available for them throughout.

Relay For Life was first held in the United States in 1985 and has since grown to over 4,438 events in 27 countries.

The International Community of Brussels Relay was one of the first Relays to be organized in Belgium, in 2011. “This year will be the 10th edition and it’s hoped it will exceed last year’s grand total raised of 77,721€,” the organisers announce.

How the public can help and to register

There are many ways to show one’s support. You can get a team together, your team should consist of 10-15 friends, family members, neighbours, colleagues, club members – anyone that wants to help fight cancer. This is also an excellent team building exercise. You may also encourage your friends to use their skills and networks as volunteers.
