A child dies in Ypres after a suicide attempt, his family talk of bullying

The Eastern Flanders Prosecutor’s office, Ypres section, has opened an inquiry into the death of a 13 year old teenager. He died after trying to kill himself. According to his family, their son was the victim of intimidation and bullying at his school. The school he attended were aware he had been bullied, “but it was last year, and wasn’t excessive bullying”, the principal of the Poperinge school said on Friday.  Staff offered their help at the time. “Over the last few months, we had no indications of a problem of this kind with this young man”, the school added.

The teenager died on Wednesday in Ypres hospital. He had tried to kill himself on Sunday. Afterwards, his family contacted police to tell them about bullying at school. The Prosecutor’s office has opened an inquiry. There are no suspects at present.
