The number of requests for a study grant explodes

The number of requests for a study grant has exploded over the last few years, going from 36,331 for the 2002-2003 school year to 47,251 for 2012-2013. This is a 30% increase in 10 years, reported the Sunday edition of La Dernière Heure. For many, the cause of this huge increase is obvious. “The economic crisis that has hit Belgium is mainly to blame. Less and less parents have the means to finance their children’s studies themselves. This is why they go to the public authorities to ask for help”, explains Corrine Martin, president of the Federation of French speaking students (Fef).

Between 2002 and 2013, the total allocated to grants by the Brussels-Wallonia federation has doubled, going from around 20 million euros to 38 million. More than a quarter of beneficiaries live in the province of Hainaut. Brussels and Liege come next, in second and third places respectively.
