ULB to offer comprehensive translating and interpreting curriculum as of September 2015

The translating and interpreting course previously organised at ISTI (Higher Institute of translators and Interpreters) and at the Cooremans Institute is to be incorporated at ULB as part of a new Department of Literature, Translation, and Communication. As many as 19 European or more exotic languages such as Mandarin, Arabic, Hebrew or Farsi will be taught at ULB from September 2015, revealed the Brussels University in a press release on Thursday.  The creation of this huge linguistic centre follows the restructuring of higher education and the agreements signed just before the summer by several Brussels actors of the sector such as: ISTI, the Cooremans Insitute, and the Free University of Brussels (ULB) which will be the only institution to offer a comprehensive curriculum in translating and interpreting.

This impressive “European centre for languages” according to ULB, will be based on “a varied approach from literature to interpretation, and including translation, linguistics, Philology, in a healthy balance with other university subjects.”

The incorporation concerns approximately 100 teachers and over 1,000 students, and will also result in a general restructuring of Departments at ULB.  The Departments of Philosophy, Literature, and Social and Political Studies will be replaced by 2 new entities: the Department of Literature, Translation, and Communication, and the Department of Philosophy and Social Studies.
