Sports studies increasingly popular in Wallonia-Brussels Federation

925 pupils chose sports studies in schools within the Wallonia-Brussels Federation for the 2014/15 school year, according to a survey conducted on January 15th, the Office of the Minister for Education Joëlle Milquet indicated on Wednesday. This option has become increasingly popular since the 2012/13 school year 2012 to 2013. This goes against the trend seen in the north of the country where the number of pupils enrolled on these courses has decreased over the last few years.

The “Sport Studies” core option appealed to 807 pupils in the 2010/11 school year within French-speaking Belgium. This figure then fell to 794 the following year. However, the number enrolled has increased each year since the 2012/13 school year: 827 in 2012-2013, 884 in 2013-2014 and 925 in 2014-2015.

In Flanders, the inverse trend applies as the so-called “topsportscholen” options have lost more than a third of their pupils during the last five years. Moreover, conventional education pathways have recorded a decrease by half of the number pupils who previously benefitted from the status of high level sports.
