The entrance exam that grants students access to the second year of medical studies after completing the first year will be made up of, on average, seven tests in the same day. This was reported by Le Soir on Saturday. More than 90% of students at Liège, Mons and Namur Universities have rejected this proposal, but Rectors and Deans have supported it, saying it’s the only way forward.
The medical studies entrance exam, which will come into force in the summer, will allow just 605 students out of the 3,000 first years at Brussels-Wallonia Federation Universities to continue into the second year. It has been put in place to drastically reduce the number of students, because of the limited number of Inami numbers available. These are needed to practice medicine.
French-speaking Universities have decided to schedule all these tests on the same day, for judicial security reasons. They have the consent of the Academy of Research and Higher education. Students from the three Universities have already rejected this exam, saying it will be like a “cull”. Deans of Medicine have said these tests are not “over the top”.
The text, which still has to be approved by the political world, will now be read by the Brussels-Wallonia Federation government a second time.
