Education Minister aims to tighten up on homeschooling

Thus far, parents wanting to have their children schooled at home have simply needed to inform the Ministry of Education’s academic monitoring service without having to present any justifications. However, the Minister of Compulsory Education, Marie Schyns, has decided to tighten up on home schooling with a view to preventing abuses, under a decree that is in the process of being adopted.

The Sudpresse media group reports that more and more children are being taught at home: 909 in 2015-2016, up from 829 in 2014-2015 and just 502 eight years earlier, according to figures from the General Administration of Education.

ASBL Elèves, a non-profit association in the education sector, notes that more parents have been opting for home-based schooling because the traditional system of education no longer meets their expectations, with bullying in schools being a major concern.

According to the cabinet of Minister Schyns, homeschooling cannot be refused under existing regulations. However, Mrs Schyns aims to “place as many safeguards as possible so as to prevent abuses”.
