Muslim school to be established in Charleroi

Wallonia’s first ever Muslim school will soon be established in Charleroi, architect Fatih Bayraktar, a volunteer with the Islamic Federation of Belgium, told the Belga news agency, confirming reports in various dailies. The kindergarten and primary school will be named “La Vertu” (Virtue). It will occupy a 3,500-square-metre building currently housing an office block. The property, which is close to the Charleroi-Sud train station, was bought for 750,000 euros by the Muslim Community of Belgium association, which manages the assets of the federation.

A fundraising appeal has been launched for work on adapting the premises, which will also cost an estimated 750,000 euros. An application for registration and subsidy still needs to be submitted to the Wallonia Brussels Federation, as had been the case for other kindergarten, primary and secondary schools set up by the Islamic Federation in Schaerbeek.

Classes at “La Vertu” school will follow the classic academic programme together with classes in the Muslim religion. However, the school is not expected to be ready for the 2018 academic year.

The federation, which has been active since 2007, has 31 mosques, two schools, a humanitarian aid organization and three religious and cultural centres (Charleroi, Farciennes and Marchienne-au-Pont).
