Belgian universities drop in international rankings

Belgium’s universities have dropped in the international higher education rankings, according to the latest edition of the QS World University Ranking. KU Leuven, the front-runner, falls ten places to 81st place in the world. Outside the top 100, the university of Ghent drops 13 places to 138th place. It’s followed by the Catholic University of Louvain-la-Neuve (UCL), down 12 to 165 and the Flemish Free University of Brussels (VUB) down six places to 188.

Outside the top 200 we find the universities of Antwerp (223), ULB (239) and Liege (391), the latter down a staggering 72 places. The universities of Mons and Hasselt were outside of the classification.

The rankings were led by the familiar names: MIT, Stanford and Harvard, with Caltech and Oxford making up the top five.

The rankings, by the independent specialist bureau Quacquarelli Symonds, are based on criteria including international reputation, numbers of students and both the publication record of faculty staff and the number of times their papers are cited in other journals. This is the 15th edition of the rankings.
