Experts propose model for increasing fees for foreign students

Two professors at the Catholic University of Louvain have come up with a model for raising the fees paid by foreign students, Le Soir reported on Tuesday. If accepted, the new system could add 30 to 40 million euros per year to the higher education budget.

French-speaking universities in Belgium have about 25,000 non-resident European students, whereas only about 3,500 Francophone Belgians study abroad. European mobility is thus asymmetrical in the case of French-speaking Belgium.

Vincent Yzerbyt, a professor in the Faculty of Psychology and Education, and Economics Professor Vincent Vandenberghe propose a two-tiered model. First, increase fees for all students, Belgian and foreign. They mention an increase of about 1,600 euros. Then compensate for this increase with a scholarship for an equivalent amount, but only for “eligible” students, i.e. those with links to French-speaking Belgium (nationality, residence, parents’ employment etc.).

The additional income could be used, for example, to employ an additional 400 lecturers, they say.
