From the 1st of January – Limitation on Job Seekers allowance

A limit on Job Seekers Allowance will come into play on the 1st of January 2015. Due to this measure, thousands of people, mainly young people, will lose their allowance during 2015. This allowance is given to people who have just left education, to tide them over while they look for a job. The Di Rupo government had decided to limit this allowance to three years, which for some ends on the 1st of January.

Currently, young people who finish their studies and have not found a job after a year continue to receive a Job Seekers Allowance. It had been limited to three years by the previous government.

Those who have no professional experience after three years lose their allowance.

According to an estimate by Onem, 16,900 people will be affected on the 1st of January, and 3,000 more over the course of the year.
