350,000 workers get a Bicycle allowance

In 2013, according to data from the Finances SPF (Services Publics Fédéraux), around 356,574 employees were given a Bicycle allowance: this is the sum given by an employer to partially cover the kilometers their cyclist employee does by bike. This is 100,000 more than 2009, La Dernière Heure said on Thursday. The sum of the allowance has also shot up, much faster than the number of beneficiaries. Whereas it used to be around 43 million euros, it is now 76,5 million euros, an increase of 75% in 5 years.

The Bicycle allowance led to a 17% increase in cyclist-workers between 2008 and 2011, according to the latest study by the Mobility SPF. The same SPF is currently doing a new study on the journeys between work and home.
