Socialist and liberal unions at Brussels Airport called for a crisis committee on Wednesday. Although the situation seemed more relaxed 48 hours ago, the unions are threatening to increase pressure which could be detrimental to the airport. Airport inspectors are worried about their official status. With the heightened terrorist threat they have had to relinquish some of their responsibilities to the police and fear that the government plans to give even more tasks to private security firms. They also worry about security at the airport.
The 2 unions had hoped to meet with Minister of Mobility Jacqueline Galant soon, but she claims the situation first requires an in-depth analysis in collaboration with the Home Secretary. Furthermore she cannot understand why the situation is suddenly urgent given that the issue has been public for a while and “there are no new ideas on the table.” Unions therefore were invited to a meeting on September 10th, but they maintain this is too late and they want an agreement by August 15th, which the Minister has already declined.
CGSP and their liberal counterpart are now calling for a crisis committee which must meet within 48 hours. “Either we reach an agreement together, or our protests could affect our employer,” point out the unions.
