More and more student jobs "in the grey"

An increasing number of jobs carried out by student minors are being done “in the grey”: partly under contract and partly illegally, according to a survey carried out by KU Leuven with 4,000 youth under 18, made known Monday by the VRT newspaper. “Grey” jobs are mainly in retail commerce and in hotel, and food and beverage services.

Half of the youth surveyed work entirely under contract, a quarter in complete illegality and another quarter in a “grey zone”. “For work done in grey, a contract is established and a salary slip is available, but overtime is paid undeclared, outside the contract,” explained Stef Adriaenssens, professor of economic sociology at KU Leuven.

“Grey” jobs are concentrated mainly in retail commerce and in hotel, and food and beverage services. They are also better-paid. The hourly salary of youth under 18 is 7.70 euros on average and 6.30 euros per hour for undeclared work. In the grey area, youth receive on average 8.30 euros per hour.
