Carrefour restructuring plan – Government’s efforts too little, too late, unions say

Trade union representatives on Friday denounced the Government’s “hypocritical compassion” for the workers affected by Carrefour’s restructuring plan as they arrived for a meeting – at around 4.30 p.m.-  with the Government at the Prime Minister’s official residence in Brussels. "We have come out of politeness, but we do not expect anything from the Government,” said Delphine Latawiec, National Secretary of the Christian union, CNE.

“It’s hypocrisy. The Government created the conditions for such restructurings,” said Myriam Delmée, Vice-President of the socialist union, Setca. "The Government is playing the professional mourners, but it’s too late,” she added. “It has reduced high-quality working conditions to nothing, by extending outsourcing, making student, night and part-time work easier, etc.… If it really wants to do something for the company, we need a legal framework that’s effective and quality employment.”

The unions also described as misleading statements made by many ministers against the use of early retirement. “We’ll talk when the Government has a serious alternative to early retirement,” Delmée said.

The meeting at the Lambermont included Federal Ministers Maggie De Block (Social Affairs), Kris Peeters (Labour), Johan Van Overtveldt (Finance) and Walloon Finance Minister Jean-Luc Crucke.

The Carrefour management was received earlier – around 3 p.m. – by the Government team.
