Unemployment continues to fall in Wallonia

Wallonia had 208,668 unemployed jobseekers at the end of February, a drop of 1.7% (-3,672) since the end of the previous month, according to data released by the regional employment office, Forem, on Monday. On an annualised basis, the figure has decreased by 8.5% (-19,418).

Wallonia had a total of 144,154 jobseekers, 30,274 persons doing internships, 20,380 who completed their compulsory registration as job seekers, and 13,860 who registered voluntarily.

On an annualised basis, the most significant change was among jobseekers aged under 25 years of age, whose number shrank by 10.8%. The number of employment seekers above the age of 50 years also decreased - by 8,5%.

Forem published 22,998 job advertisements in February 2018, a 26% increase over the same month of 2017. “If this progression in part translates the evolution in the labour demand in Wallonia, it could also reflect the increasing number of businesses that turn to Forem to advertise their job offers,” the regional employment office said.
